INTERVIEW: MAY 2008
Alex Hipolito's
Snail Mail

1.What drew you to through the mail autograph collecting?

I originally started collecting in the early 90s and would send out about 10 a year, and stopped for a while.
When my son Alex was born, I wanted to start family traditions, and hobbies we could enjoy for years to come.
I started buying him yearly Topps sets, and this year will be his third Cooperstown trip.
When we go to Cooperstown on Induction Weekend, we try and get two autographs, and I take pictures of Alex with the Hall Of Famer.
One of my favorite pictures is of Alex sitting on Harmon Killebrew's lap during last year's trip.
In-Person autograph collecting tends to get expensive, so I decided to start sending through the mail again, and occasionally still make the rounds at autograph signing events.

2.What are a few of your favorite autographs you have obtained over the years?

I really enjoy it when players or coaches take the extra time to personalize our item, or answer our questions.
This is the main reason we send out 5x7 Custom Index cards, so players have extra space to write.
It's great getting back an autograph through the mail, but it's great when you get a success where Hunter Pence writes "You never lose when you love the game", or  Tommy Lasorda writes "Dear Alex I hope you grow up to be an outstanding young man. I hope you will reach all your goals in life. Always do your best to make your parents proud of you. You owe them love and respect. Your Friend Tom Lasorda"!

3.Do you recommend anything to new or older collector’s of the autograph hobby?

When you start collecting, don't just send out blindly to all the top stars.
You'll find yourself getting frustrated by the lack of successes.
There are a lot of great collector sites out there that report their successes, which is a good place to start.
It's a continual learning process, and once you figure out what works best for you, it will become one of the most enjoyable hobbies around.

This is the Best TTM Signer Tourament.

Voting will be open for one week per matchup.

This weeks Final matchup is

Bobby Doerr is the people's choice.
